Project Overview
Chamberlain Road presented a familiar challenge, mainly that the existing layout didn't not function well and related poorly to the South facing garden. The brief was to create a brighter, more flexible living environment that still felt comfortable for everyday use. Our design re‑organises the plan, improves flow, and strengthens the connection to the garden while respecting the character of the original house.
Internal Refurbishment
Internally, the kitchen and living spaces were reconfigured to bring daylight deeper into the plan and create a more intuitive sequence of rooms. Tall internal doors allow the spaces to operate in two modes: closed for quiet, private rooms, or open to form one generous family environment. A new bedroom was introduced with its own calm, private outlook, improving the home’s long‑term adaptability.
Garden Extension
The existing garden elevation had four disparate extensions located on the South-garden elevation. The new extension sees the removal of two existing lean to structures and sees the consolidation of the rear elevation as a more refined form so the new extension sits 'comfortably' together with the retain Victorian conservatory. Concealed structure removes the need for external posts, allowing the full‑height sliding doors to open completely against the wall. This creates an uninterrupted view to the garden and a seamless indoor–outdoor connection. Integrated lighting and motorised blinds keep the space uncluttered and easy to use throughout the day.
Materiality and Detail
Dark‑stained timber cladding and expressed metalwork give the extension depth and character while complementing the existing house. Slimline glazing maximises transparency without visual noise. Inside, warm materials and carefully considered junctions create a coherent transition between old and new. The detailing prioritises simplicity, durability and a calm visual language.
Outcome
The completed project gives the clients a home that works beautifully for everyday living and larger gatherings alike. The spaces feel brighter, more connected and more flexible, while still retaining the intimacy the clients valued.
