New Build Office Development
Colinton, Edinburgh

  • Location: Colinton Road, Edinburgh

  • Project type: Commercial Office

  • Services: Services upto technical

Project Overview

This project for a new office building by Crew Architects focused on how best to locate the new workspace within its restricted environs. The central Colinton Village location presented significant constraints, including proximity to the Listed Mackenzie Cottage, neighbouring public facilities, and a steep slope leading to the Water of Leith. These conditions shaped a careful, context‑driven design strategy.

Architectural Approach

Crew Architects developed a sensitive yet contemporary response that respects the character of Mackenzie Cottage while introducing a robust modern form. The building sits low against the tall trees, with a series of rectangular timber posts that frame long views and maintain the visual presence of the woodland when approached from the road.

Internally, the layout is deliberately simple and efficient. Workstations are positioned away from the meeting room to minimise disruption and benefit from a calm, north‑facing outlook. The design prioritises clarity, natural light, and a strong connection to the landscape.

Outcome

The completed scheme delivers a discreet, context‑led building that enhances its sensitive setting while providing functional, well‑lit office space. It preserves key views, respects adjacent heritage assets, and demonstrates Crew Architects’ commitment to thoughtful, site‑specific contemporary design.

Frequently asked questions

What makes Crew Architects a good fit for commercial clients?
We combine robust contemporary design with a strong understanding of planning, heritage, and technical delivery. Our approach is practical, context‑aware, and tailored to the operational needs of each business.

What are the benefits of a bespoke office building over a refurbishment?
A new‑build office allows full control over layout, energy performance, accessibility, and long‑term operational efficiency. The Colinton office demonstrates how a tailored design can maximise views, privacy, and staff wellbeing.

How does Crew Architects approach challenging or constrained sites?
We specialise in context‑driven design, working carefully around heritage buildings, steep slopes, tight boundaries, and sensitive landscapes. The Colinton office project is a strong example of how we integrate contemporary architecture into complex settings.
