Cobden Edinburgh
In a tale woven with unforeseen challenges, a remarkable project unfolded as clients from Hong Kong acquired a semi-detached 19th century dwelling in Edinburgh, sight unseen. Their leap of faith extended to appointing an architect and main contractor solely through virtual meetings, setting the stage for an extraordinary journey. Little did anyone anticipate the curveball that would follow - the unexpected arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic!
Yet, amidst these trials, the culmination of this venture is a source of immense pride. The revitalised Victorian residence, a testament to resilience, owes its success to the dedication of main contractor Inscape Joinery. Notably, the clients played a pivotal role, displaying unwavering focus despite the unforeseen challenges thrown their way.
The project unfolded in two distinctive phases, beginning with the meticulous refurbishment and repair of the existing house. This phase presented an opportunity to thermally upgrade the building while preserving its original decorative features. A key objective was to 'future-proof' the property, ensuring it met contemporary standards without compromising its historic charm.
The second phase involved obtaining planning permission for a rear garden extension, strategically nestled between the existing outbuilding, garage, and the back of the house. This new addition acts as a link, connecting the main dwelling with the garden beyond. Two expansive rooflights crown the dining area, flooding the space with natural light and enhancing the connection to the kitchen behind.
As the new dining area nestles against the exposed former external walls, now enclosed by the extension, a play of materials and tones emerges. The interplay of refurbished heritage elements and thoughtful contemporary interventions is a recurring theme, creating a harmonious blend of the old and the new.
Throughout the project, the juxtaposition of tones, materials, and colors within each space adds depth and character, contributing to a serene and inviting home environment. The clients' meticulous selection of furniture and fittings serves as the finishing touch, effortlessly marrying modernity with timeless elegance.
In the face of unforeseen challenges, this project stands tall as a testament to collaboration, resilience, and a shared vision across continents.
